This is the fist year for a bold new initiative to help stimulate the global economy. Virtually all developed nations around the World are participating. Restaurants almost everywhere, from cafes to fast food eateries, to the most upscale establishments have agreed to provide lunch at no charge to anyone who stops in.

Although the restaurants will be losing a lot of money in the short term, the hope is that it will raise the interest level in eating out for lunch. The long term effect, it is hoped, will be larger profits for the restaurant business.

I know, I for one, will be visiting a local exclusive restaurant that is normally too expensive for my tastes. As soon as I recieved an inside tip about the promotion, I made my reservations.

Apparently, the idea was sparked by Ben & Jerry's and their annual Free Ice Cream Day. Research on their sales figures for the months following the free ice cream promotion, showed that sales spiked way up. The promotion paid for itself at least five times over.

This January, Federal Reserve Board Chairman of the United States, Alan Greenspan, sent a memo to President Bush proposing Free Lunch Day. The President liked the idea so much, he coordinated with other leaders around the World and International Free Lunch Day was born.
